ISSUE XVII: THE OBSESSION ISSUE

Ty Cole

Ty Cole is an Alabama-born, New York based photographer. After graduating from the Art Institute of Atlanta in 2001 he moved back to his home state to assist an advertising photographer, where he learned the ins and outs of the business. After a year and a half the allure of New York City became too much to ignore and he packed his truck and headed north to assist the world-renown photographers he studied in school. After a few years of carrying cases and building his client list, he decided it was time to take the leap and go on his own. Since then, he has had the good fortune of working with international advertising agencies, magazines and architectural firms. While not on the clock with a client he is constantly at work developing his style as an artist. In addition to photography, he is also in the process of starting a Brooklyn-based furniture design company in collaboration with an architect friend of his.

At an early age the camera became a release for him from the traditional surroundings while growing up in Alabama. Through the lens his world became a modern place with orthogonal shapes and unique compositions. It was through these compositions he realized, and still realizes, his fate as artist.

As he matured, the nature of his subjects begin to affect him, they weren’t just shapes anymore, they were parts of a world that he lives in.  A world with contradictions, contrast and purity. Now, with his camera, he seeks to expose these attributes and in turn help him to better understand the world around him.

This is undeniably one of the most fascinating blogs I’ve seen. It’s so easy to tune out, but there’s really some first class material online, and I believe your site is one of the few!
