The New Bohemians

New Yorkers are self-proclaimed self-absorbed people. We are all in it for Me. We share a tiny space of land with about 19 million other people, and it’s a ruthless place to survive. But we also find that there is a huge sense of community around us, nobody makes it here without a little help from friends. This issue highlighted some of the best talent at Working Class, fashion stories and photography of some unique artists, our eight person cover shot interviews everyone from Amanda LePore to our local, lovely bartender Alan O’Keeffe.

The Love Brigade

Name: Alyssa Key

Occupation: Owner/Senior Designer of Love Brigade, Owner of Love Brigade Co Op

Years in New York: 2.5 yrs

Hometown(s): Jacksonville, FL and London, UK

What brought you to New York?
The trail started with a near-death experience that moved me away from my hometown and missiled me into an Italian Fashion School in the UK. Whilst living in London, I missed the States dearly (though a good size chunk of my heart is with London), and at the end of my stay I realized that New York was the next natural step. It was here or Milan, but non parlo Italiano, and I missed cat calls.

What do you love about the city?
The undying ability to build a strong foundation and stable network with equally amazing people who are also following their destiny. That, and being shat on by pigeons. What….? It’s good luck…. wait… isn’t it?

What do you hate?
Rats. Recently my dog lifted his head up from running around like a madman, and had a rat half his own size in his mouth. You’ve never seen so many screaming girls jump on top of chairs in your life (strip clubs excluded).

Anyone whose rent could buy a mansion in middle America yet has still never been to the Statue of Liberty.

The Native

Occupation: Owner, Dave’s Quality Meat

Years in New York: 38

Hometown: Brooklyn, NY

What brought you to New York?
I would have to say it was my parents having sex 38 years ago, and my mom giving birth to me. That is what brought me to Brooklyn, New York, the greatest place on earth.

What do you love about the city?
The thing I love the most about this city is everyone has a chance. It’s like Sinatra sang in that song “If you can make it here, you can make it anywhere… New York, New York.” This place is so nice we named it twice.

What do you hate?
I hate the fact that New York is changing into Disneyland, a state for tourists.

What’s your definition of a New Yorker?
My definition of a New Yorker is a no nonsense person… a straight shooter that shoots from the mouth. If something is crazy, you will hear it from a New Yorker that’s why people don’t really like us…

Best or worst New York moment?
The day my bike got stolen was the worst moment ‘cause I let my guard down, but then five hours later I got my bike back. Best moment… it’s dope when you grew up here and you know a lot of people the way I do, I had 150 bike messengers looking for my bike and they found it.

What three things are you addicted to right now?
My girl, my Bike, cigarettes

What one New York job would you want to do, if you weren’t who
you are?
Owner of a Max Fish Bar on Ludlow that place is a cash cow.

Where do you see yourself in five years?
I see myself being 42 years old… damn I’m getting up there in the numbers, I can’t believe it. And I will still be skating and riding my bike…

The uneven ratio of women to men. The men have it way too good.

The Songstress

Name: Stina Kinck

Occupation: Singer/Songwriter

Years in New York: 3

Hometown: Copenhagen, Denmark

What brought you to new york?
I came to pursue the music thing, and to just get out of Copenhagen. To be inspired in general…

What do you love about the city?
I love so much about this place—the range of different nationalities filling the streets and the music that comes with that is a main factor. I love that no matter what your brand of crazy is, you’ll fit in somewhere in this city.

What do you hate?
The stress level is a killer, everybody has an eating disorder and
there is absolutely no normality ‘cause everybody is busy being
“Original”.

What’s your definition of a New Yorker?
Seems like people tend to lose their social skills and replace them
with networking skills after being here for a while. New Yorkers know how to bullshit! But they say that’s how you get rich?

Best or worst New York moment?
I’ve had so many amazing moments here, it’s always a small thing that might not make sense to anyone else, but will leave me truly appreciating living here.

What three things are you addicted to right now?
Coffee, wine, and music.

What one New York job would you want to do, if you weren’t who you are?
I think I would want to be cab driver, I’m a sucker for crazy stories and cab drivers get nothing but that!

Where do you see yourself in five years?
Still here, playing music, stressing out, drinking too much coffee and being a little drunk on wine.

Years in New York: 5

Hometown: Chicago

What brought you to new york? Fame and fortune.

What do you love about the city?
My friends, the views, and the fabulous man who lives in a car parked on a plot of land behind a fence on Franklin St in Greenpoint.

What do you hate?
Complaining about NYC is very hip, so even though I want to, I will try to resist.

What’s your definition of a New Yorker?
Well, I had a magical definition based on Warhol movies and punk docs, but now my definition would be a douchey 29-year-old girl in a going-out top and Seven jeans wandering around drunk, thinking she is in Los Angeles, wearing large plastic jewelry and dancing to Timberland songs.

Best or worst New York moment?
On Saturday I am singing at Central Park with Patti Smith for the Marc Bolan Tribute show. It hasn’t happened yet, but I think it’s going to be the best!

What three things are you addicted to right now?
Day Quil, champagne diamonds, and playing shows in St Louis.

What one New York job would you want to do, if you weren’t who you are?
Collecting cans and cashing them in at Key Food, because I actually did that for awhile and I was pretty into it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?
On a billboard in Times Square and/or Tokyo.
